10 Weirdest LEGO Sets

Everybody loves LEGO. With colorful bricks, cute minifigures and an amazing variety of sets, what’s not to like?

The thing is, LEGO sets are cool but they are not all created equal. Some of them are just… well… strange. We’ve made a list of the 10 weirdest LEGO sets, starting from the LEGO golden age in the 1980s, in case you want inspiration to make your LEGO collection truly unique.

Without further ado, we present to you the 10 weirdest LEGO sets ever.

Set 1592: Town Square – Castle Scene

This colorful set was offered as part of the Classic Town theme. It’s really detailed, with eleven minifigures and an elaborate town square scene. There were two versions of the set: the English version from 1980 and the Dutch version that was released in 1983.

Why it’s weird

You may think this is a perfectly ordinary LEGO set, one of those huge, colorful sets all kids want. Well, yes and no. Look again and you’ll see a modern town scene, an interesting statue, some traffic… and wait a second, what’s that? A castle with medieval warriors?

This is one of the rare sets that combine two completely different themes. It features a mixture of Classic Town items with medieval items that are better suited for the LEGO Castle theme. The weirdest thing is that there’s no context and no explanation. Those little medieval guys are hanging out, chilling and overlooking a modern town square with shops and cars. Also, there’s a horse pulling a cart. WTF? Were the LEGO designers mighty drunk when they made this one? Or maybe it was some sort of an inside joke? We’ll never know.

Why it’s cool

This is an amazing set full of great pieces. It includes eleven different minifigures, some of which are dressed in full medieval warrior attire. This weird mix works on so many levels; you to get both a modern Town scene and a Castle scene in one set.

There could be an explanation for all of this. Maybe the medieval warriors are just actors employed in the castle. As we all know, many European towns have remains of old castles within the city. So yes, it’s plausible. Or perhaps there’s something else going on, like time travel. Or, you know, a typical renaissance fair. Use your imagination to explain it. Whatever you think about the strange mix, one thing is certain: this is a great set that keeps on giving.

Set 6951: Robot Command Center

This set is part of the great astronaut theme released in the mid-1980s. It has the classic astronaut minifigures and strange space building design. This was a popular set back in the day and kids loved it, so that’s all that matters, right?

Why it’s weird

The set itself is OK; it’s the command center  thing that’s really strange. It has legs? And arms? And windows instead of eyes? But strangest of all, look at its tiny feet. You have to wonder how the thing manages to balance itself. What were they thinking when they made this one? In a way, yes, it’s understandable. That’s a robot command center, and the center itself is supposed to be a robot, right? Which means the building is the robot that is being commanded… or something? See, it’s just confusing. Cute, yes, but confusing and weird to the fullest.

Why it’s cool

This is one of those classic sets all kids adore. It may seem strange to adults, but rest assured, kids never complained about it. This tells you a lot about adults’ lack of imagination. Sure, it has a very quirky design and a strange blue color, but it fits the whole space exploration theme. Best of all, the set has numerous special and rare pieces that you can combine in many different ways. What’s not to like?

Set 1853: Hypno Cruiser

The much-maligned Time Cruisers theme was not one of LEGO’s best. It’s clear it was made using whatever parts LEGO had overproduced over the years. And as such, it’s a bit gimmicky. The set features time traveling vehicles and all the strange things that can happen to the crew along the way.

Why it’s weird

A  picture is worth a thousand words. But in this case, a picture can’t do this set justice. It’s weird in every single aspect. The car itself is a mishmash of bricks that have been taken from many different themes. The accessories were probably made to highlight the different time periods the vehicle can visit, but they just seem random and out of place. And the monkey. What’s the monkey doing in there? We’ll never know.

Why it’s cool

The mishmash of themes is part of this set’s charm. In a way, the set looks like it was designed by a kid, which makes it really cool. The minifigures are great, especially the professor, even the monkey. You can never have too many LEGO monkeys. Because this set offers some really rare pieces, it gives you great value for money. You’ll have so much fun building this one.

Set 6496: Whirling Time Warper

This is another offering from the Time Cruisers theme. Like we said, the theme was made out of overproduced and discontinued parts, so you can’t blame its mishmash aesthetics. This set is one of the strangest offerings in the theme.

Why it’s weird

We tried to limit ourselves to only one Time Cruisers set, but it was impossible to resist this one. This set is even weirder than the Hypno Cruiser. In fact, this is probably the most psychedelic LEGO set ever. This set has everything: a wide range of movable items and even a ghost. What is any of that supposed to mean? We have no clue, and we doubt that the LEGO designers do.

Why it’s cool

This set demonstrates how to effectively use random parts to tell a story. There are many parts to play with, and the set is packed with accessories: claws, skulls, wands, and knives. It has it all. Almost everything on this vehicle works. No, it won’t make you travel through time (we think?), but you will enjoy everything that this set offers. The central console… thing with jewels is just cool. And yes, it’s movable. It’s a truly powerful set.

Set 2539: Fright Knights Batwing Flyer

This set is part of the Fright Knights sub-theme that extends the ordinary Castle theme. The Batwing Flyer is a small, introductory set with a super-cool Bat Lord minifigure. LEGO also released a similar set with the Bat Lord and a crystal ball. What makes this sub-theme special is that this was the first time the bat figure and crystal ball accessory were introduced.

Why it’s weird

Take a good look at it. Come on, just do it. Yes, it’s exactly what it appears to be. It depicts a medieval warrior riding a medieval flying machine. Medieval. Flying. Machine. Case closed.

Why it’s cool

A bit of context always helps. This was a special sub-theme in the Castle series that was made to add a fantasy vibe to the ordinary medieval scenes. Its main minifigure is Basil the Bat Lord, and yes, he has a flying machine. He also has his magical bat staff, and while it’s unclear what it does, it looks pretty cool. The Fright Knights sub-theme also features witches and crystal balls, so a flying machine is not even closest to the weirdest thing offered here. This is a really cool little set, especially for those who like medieval fantasy.

Set 3314: Police Unit

This is a special set released to promote 1998 Football World Cup. As such, it is football-themed and includes four minifigures, which is always a plus for such a small set.

Why it’s weird

The set was made to promote 1998 Football World Cup, right? And boy, does it promote. The set depicts an important aspect of any football match: a police riot. Yes, that’s right, this nice little LEGO scene shows cops arresting a hooligan. Should we remind you that the set was released to, you know, celebrate football?

Now, we get it. Hooligans are a true problem plaguing this great sport, but still, it’s a weird choice for a scene. It almost feels like one of those adult LEGO themes people make in their spare time. But no, this is the real deal, released by official LEGO. WTF were they thinking?

Why it’s cool

It’s actually a great set. It offer so much: four minifigures, including a female police officer and a cool looking hooligan. It also has two police vehicles, one of them being a special truck for prisoners. You can actually open the doors, ceiling and the jail to capture hooligans. All in all, this is a great set that keeps on giving. When it comes to subject matter, this is probably the most original LEGO set ever.

Set 3110: Four Animal Friends

This cute little set is part of a lesser-known Scala theme targeted at young girls. Originally released in 1979, Scala was discontinued in 1980 only to be revived in 1997. The theme featured different types of minifigures and accessories. Because it was marketed exclusively to young girls, it focused on cute items, jewelry, accessories, furniture and the like. The minifigures were made to look like dolls.

Why it’s weird

You think the Friends theme is bad? This was even worse. It doesn’t look like LEGO at all. Yes, we get it. It’s because the theme itself departed way too much from the standard LEGO bricks and minifigures. Still, this set goes one step further. It includes a strange picnic featuring a Dalmatian, a cat, and kittens. The animals are made in questionable sizes. The accessories don’t help. We have a picnic blanket, jars, plates, and some food. None of which seems like something animals would eat. The theme was probably made to be used with human Scala dolls, but still. Without dolls, it just seems like a dog and a cat with kittens went out on a date. Not a pleasant image.

Why it’s cool

Well, it’s cute. It actually offers a lot of value for such a small set. It makes a great addition to any Scala set and it allows you to have many items to play with your Scala dolls. Let’s not be too mean. This theme was made to be used in a specific way by little girls. It does what it’s supposed to do. Also, while some experiments are not successful, it’s important to keep experimenting. We congratulate LEGO for trying.

Set 3551: Dino-Jet

The Znap theme was released in 1998, but the problem was it looked way too much like K’nex building sets. It wasn’t the most original move in LEGO history and it attracted a lot of criticism. That being said, the Znap theme includes some really cool pieces that you could use to build different vehicles, buildings and bridges.

Why it’s weird

Znap sets were weird in general, but this one was probably the most confusing of them all. It’s supposed to be a vehicle, probably a jet. Sure, let’s trust them on this. The truth is, this thing looks nothing like a jet or anything else for that matter. The other design ideas on the box look equally confusing and weird.

Why it’s cool

As weird as the vehicle is, it does promote thinking and building originality. Znap pieces are unique and they make you think before you build. They connect in unusual ways, which opens numerous interesting opportunities. Let’s face it, the whole Znap line proved to be a huge failure for LEGO, but it doesn’t mean it’s worthless. It may not offer the typical LEGO building experience, but it’s a cool set for those who like construction toys.

Set 4095-1: Record and Play

Creator themes are always very interesting. Targeted at older kids with an interest in building and engineering, they are highly original and encourage exploration and inventive solutions. This set was especially made for experimenting. It allows you to record movement instructions for your robot and then you can play them to see the robot move.

Why it’s weird

The design is questionable, to say the least. It looks like an insect, and while the box shows other possibilities, it still seems strange. Despite its name, the purpose of the set is not really clear. Record and play what? Is this some sort of an audio recorder? If so, why is it shaped as an insect? It makes no sense whatsoever. Even when you read the instructions, it still seems weird. Out all of the shapes a robot can take, they picked a huge insect? Really, LEGO? Really?

Why it’s cool

Despite the strange design, this is a very powerful set. It comes with a unique piece equipped with two rotation sensors, which means you can record the movements you want your robot to make and then play them back using the same two motors. Pretty cool, huh? Also, you can make several different models out of the same set, so you don’t have to stick to the insect design if it’s not your thing. All in all, this is one of the coolest LEGO sets ever.

Set 8073: Manta Warrior

Released as part of the Atlantis theme, this little set is unique for being probably the smallest LEGO set released in a box. It was released with five Papermate pens of varying colors in a pencil case.

Why it’s weird

This is such a tiny set you can only wonder why? Why release it at all? Sure, the minifigure is pretty cool, but that’s about it. The set includes a Manta Warrior minifigure and amazingly thirteen brick pieces. Yes, that’s right, you get a whole thirteen pieces. The only thing you get to build is a pathetic little rock for this guy.

Why it’s cool

Manta Warrior is a truly awesome minifigure. You will not regret buying the set just for him. Also, the rock, as tiny as it is… well, it’s still kinda cute. It’s always great to get something extra with your minifigure, even if it’s just a tiny rock. Also, being such a small set in a box, it also makes a great collector’s item.
